Before I begin my study, I am going to provide a series of questions that I asked myself about being in Yahweh’s covenant. I hope they can be an important background for my audience, as you carefully examine what I am presenting – I have given my answers at the sixth part of this series..

Q: What is a biblical covenant ?
Q: Why would you want to be covenanted ?
Q: Which covenant should you be considering ?
Q: Are you covenanted ?
Q: With whom are you covenanted ?
Q: How do you know that you are covenanted ?
Q: What conditions do you need to fulfil, to be in this covenant ?
Q: What are the consequences for keeping the conditions of this covenant ?
Q: Can you break this covenant ?
Q: What are the consequences for breaking the conditions of this covenant ?
Q: What can you do when you break it ?
Q: Can you be covenanted with Yahweh & Yahushua if you are not :
(a) the physical seed of Abraham, and/or
(b) part of physical Israel, and/or
     (c) “adopted” into Israel as Ruth, a Moabitess, was (Ruth 4:11), and/or “grafted in”, as Paul indicates in Rom 11:17, 19, 23 & 24 ?

If you don't belong to one of these groups, aren’t you, as Paul writes in Eph 2:12, “excluded from the Commonwealth of Israel”, & therefore “strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, & without Yahweh in the world” ?

Q:  If you disagree with the implications of the previous question, what covenant do you think you are in, & what conditions are required to be in that covenant ? How do you really know what you have believed about this ?

If we are to really, really understand what Yahweh’s Word is telling us in the original context, & in the manner which the original authors intended it to be understood, wouldn’t it be a good idea to examine as much accurate information on the biblical, historical, social, geographical & cultural background of the text as is possible ?

Isn’t it true, that unless I consider ALL the evidence I find about a subject, in this case, “covenant”, how will I really know, if what I think I have found, & have been taught, or what I believe, or what I have seen, & read, or what I have heard, is true & correct ?

Isn’t it therefore logical, that we should investigate what “covenant” meant to those original audiences, rather than what we currently think it means?

In this study I intend to cover several subjects that I hope you will find interesting & helpful. They include :

What is a biblical covenant, with specific scriptural examples ?

What is covenant renewal in ancient Israel ?

What is the “new” covenant according to Scripture ?

What does an ancient marriage covenant look like, & how does it relate to the “new” covenant ?

A series of questions, with my personal answers, that are designed to address the title of this study, “Are You Really in Covenant with Yahweh (God) – How do you really know ?”

This is quite a long study, so I hope you can be patient, by reading through each of the next five parts of this series,  because I believe it contains information that is not widely known, and/or understood.
Welcome back !

Please note that I will be using the personal names of the Creator, and His Son – the Creator’s name is Yahweh, which I will abbreviate to YHWH, because there are other legitimate pronunciations for the Hebrew tetragrammaton, yod-hey-vav-hey, the heavenly Father's personal name, & Yahushua, whom you probably know as Jesus.

In this study I have quoted many scriptural verses to support what I have written, but, because some of the quotes are several verses in length, I may not have included all these. May I respectfully ask you to look these up for yourselves. The verses that I have included are from the Hebrew Roots Bible version.

The Facts

Because YHWH’s Word was written over a period of several thousand years, by many different authors, & in ancient languages, my personal observation is that I, and I’m guessing many others too, have in the past, been confused about several important biblical concepts, including the idea of “covenant”, & especially, “the new covenant” of the NT. While this confusion is a frustrating problem, I have found that a careful examination of the biblical, & the available ancient near East archeological data tells me a lot about this vitally important biblical concept.

My research has shown me that during the time of early biblical history, covenants existed to unify people with their kings & leaders, their gods, & with each other.

In the Bible, & the ancient near East :

1:  A covenant is an agreement, usually formal, between two or more parties, to do, or not do something that is specified. At a very basic level, a covenant is an oath-bound relationship between those two or more parties.

2:  A covenant is not the same as a promise, but a covenant can be made to strengthen the promises that are made.

3:  A biblical covenant between two or more parties usually has, at least a proposal, & an acceptance. In the Bible, a covenant often was ratified with a ritual, such as a sacrifice, & was regularly confirmed with a meal.

Several biblical covenants had signs and/or witnesses attached to them. Sometimes, possessions such as robes were exchanged.

4:  Most covenants have conditions, (the dos & don’t do’s), that must be followed by all parties.

Being in a covenant, & doing or not doing what the covenant requires, produces blessings.

Being a covenant, and breaking its requirements, results in serious consequences (curses).

5:  In ancient times, there were three basic types of covenant – Parity covenants, Suzerainty covenants, & Royal Grant covenants.

Parity Covenants were made between individuals who had equal status.

Suzerainty Covenants were between a greater/stronger party (the Suzerain) & a weaker party (the Vassal). There were always conditions which were declared by the Suzerain, & agreed to by the vassal.

Royal Grant Covenants were between a stronger and a weaker party (a special kind of suzerainty covenant), where the rights of the vassal are protected, not those of the suzerain.

Biblical examples of these types of covenant

Parity Covenant Biblical Examples

In Gen 21:22-32, there is a parity covenant made between Abraham & Abimelech at Beersheba – the terms were set, oaths were taken, sheep & oxen were exchanged, & ewe lambs presented as witnesses to their covenant – they cut a covenant.

In Gen 31:44-54, there are details of Jacob’s covenant with Laban – a pillar of stones was raised as a memorial, oaths were sworn with YHWH as their witness, terms were set, a sacrifice was made, & a meal was shared.

Joshua made a covenant (league) with the Gibeonites, which is described in Joshua 9:6-16. Even though the Gibeonites lied about their origin and condition, Joshua honoured the covenant he made with them because he had sworn an oath.

1 Sam 18:3-4 tells us that David and Jonathan made a parity covenant with each other, in which Jonathan gave David his robe, his belt & sword. 2 Sam 9:7 & 21:7 describe how the covenant made between David & Jonathan still applied to Jonathan’s son, ever after Jonathan had been killed.

Suzerainty Covenant Biblical Examples

Again, a Suzerainty Covenant is one wherein a superior (a greater/stronger) individual, (the Suzerain), such as a king, made an agreement with one of his vassals (the weaker party). There were always conditions, made only by the Suzerain. Often, the Suzerainty Covenant used a legal system which included adoption - the suzerain (great king) adopts the people, & sometimes individuals of the vassal king.

Let me summarise a most important biblical Suzerainty Covenant between YHWH & Abram. It is sometimes called a Promise Covenant because YHWH proposed, or promised it. Eph 2:12 (above) makes reference to this promise covenant.

Gen 12:1 tells us of YHWH’s instruction (Torah) to Abram – it is the first part of YHWH’s proposal

Gen 12:1 And YAHWEH had said to Abram, Go out from your land and from your kindred, and  from your father's house, to the land which I will show you.

Gen 12:2-3 gives us details of YHWH’s promise/proposal

Gen 12:2 And I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you and make your name great; and you will be a blessing.
Gen 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, and curse the one despising you. And in you all families of the earth shall be blessed.

Gen 12:4 tells us Abram accepted this proposal by doing what YHWH instructed.

Gen 12:4 And Abram went out, even as YAHWEH had spoken to him. And Lot went with him. And Abram was a son of seventy five years when he departed from Haran.

There is no mention of brith, the Hebrew word translated as “covenant” in this chapter.

Gen 15:1 was a declaration/promise from YHWH directly to Abram.

Gen 15:1 After these things the Word of YAHWEH came to Abram in a vision, saying, Do not fearAbram; I am a shield to you, your reward will increase greatly.

Gen 15:2-3  & 8 tell us of Abram’s request for a guarantee of YHWH’s promise of his inheritance

Gen 15:2 And Abram said, Adonai YAHWEH, what will You give to me? I am going childless and the son of the inheritance of my house is Eleazar of Damascus?
Gen 15:3 And Abram said, Behold! You have given no seed to me; and lo, the son of my house is inheriting of me!

Gen 15:8 And he said, Adonai (LORD) YAHWEH, by what shall I know that I shall inherit it?

Gen15:4-5 gives us YHWH’s promise/proposal

Gen 15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir
Gen 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be

Gen 15:6 shows us how Abram accepted YHWH’s proposal by believing what He (YHWH) promised, as was expressed by Abram’s obedient actions.

Gen 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness

Gen 15:9-12 & 17 give details of the blood ratification (another aspect of some covenants) of YHWH’s covenant with Abram & his seed, as a result of Abram asking for a guarantee. As a consequence of this, there was now a death penalty, a condition, for any breach of this covenant.

Details of this will be provided below.

Gen 15:9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
Gen 15:10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
Gen 15:11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
Gen 15:12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him

Gen 15:17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces

Q: Doesn’t Gen 15:18 tell us that YHWH says He cut a covenant (brith) with Abram ?

Gen 15:18 In the same day Yahweh made (cut) a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Q: How could YHWH have cut a covenant with Abram, when Abram was in a deep sleep ?
A:  In Gen 15:17, we see two entities – a smoking furnace and a lighted lamp. Who are these entities ? Was Abram a party to this covenant ?

We know that Yahushua is called the “light of the world” in John 8:12 & John 9:5 – is it not reasonable to assume that a pre-incarnated Yahushua was this “lighted lamp” of Gen 15:17, & Father YHWH was the “smoking furnace” ?

Joh 8:12 Therefore Yahushua (Jesus) spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the worldHe who follows Me shall by no means walk in darkness, but possess the light of life.”

Joh 9:5 “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Q: What two things are signified by walking between the sacrificed animal pieces  ?
A:
1: Agreement to keep the covenant being made, and
2: Suffering the same consequences as the dead animals, if either or both parties ever broke that covenant ?

Isn’t is probably that Yahushua, the “lighted lamp”, was Abram’s substitute, his proxy, since Abram was in a “deep sleep” ?

If this is correct, then wasn’t Yahushua willing to take on Himself the death penalty for Abram and his descendants, IF they broke this Gen 15 covenant !

Surely, Jer 31:32 is the empirical proof that declares the descendants of Abraham, the Israelites of the Exodus, as participants of this Abrahamic covenant !

Jer 31:32 not according to the covenant that I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt (which covenant of Mine they broke, although I was to be a husband to them, says YAHWEH).

Isn’t this a major reason as to why Yahushua took upon Himself the “death penalty” for the party that broke the covenant, when He was crucified ?

Comment

Please note carefully – you may not have ever read, or heard what I am about to explain, so please choose to have an open mind when reading, & considering it.

Yahushua stood in as Abram's, (later Abraham), & his descendants’ proxy, their substitute. These descendants broke the Promise Covenant, which was renewed with the Mt Sinai covenant of Exod 19:5-6, with the golden calf sin, & were guilty. Yahushua, who had freely accepted their death position, was now responsible, and had to die in their (our) place.

The Gen 15 covenant was YHWH’s insurance to Abraham (at Abram’s request), that YHWH’s Promise was good. The Promise Covenant was “damaged” when Abraham’s descendants broke the Exod 19:5-6, covenant. That covenant break enacted the ‘death position’. Remember though, that in YHWH’s case, it also gave Him the legal right to send His ‘goél’, kinsman redeemer, (Yahushua), in their place (Lev 25:25-26, Ruth 3:9 & 12,& Ruth 4:14).

Exo 19:5 And now if listening you will listen to My voice, and will keep My covenant, you shall become a special treasure to Me above all the nations, for all the earth is Mine.
Exo 19:6 And you shall become a kingdom of priests for Me, a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the sons of Israel.

Lev 25:25 If your brother has become poor and has sold his property, then his kinsman redeemer shall come, and he shall redeem the thing sold by his brother.
Lev 25:26 But when a man has no kinsman redeemer to him, and his own hand has reached out, and he has enough for its redemption,

Rth 3:9 And he said, Who are you? And she said, I am your handmaid Ruth, and you shall spread your skirt over your handmaid, for you are a kinsman redeemer.

Rth 3:12 And now, surely it is true that I am a kinsman redeemer. But there also is a redeemer closer to you than I.

Rth 4:14 And the women said to Naomi, Blessed be YAHWEH, who has not left you this day without a kinsman-redeemer; and may his name be called in Israel.

Yahushua then had the unique covenant standing & position, to die for all parties concerned. Yahushua qualified for this, because He was sinless, & therefore was, a perfect sacrifice.

YHWH wants desperately to extend salvation to all. YHWH is LOVE, but He is also the supreme Law Giver, & the ultimate Law Keeper. Therefore, He has to extend salvation in a legal way, a way that will not violate His Love, His justice, His mercy, His law, His covenant, or His oath !

Yahushua died the death for the adulterous bride (Israel), the rebellious son (the Lost Tribes), for the sins of the world, & for breaking the Gen 15 covenant, (all as the spotless lamb of YHWH).

Although the descendants of Abraham (Israel) broke the Gen 15 Covenant, & the Exod 19:5-6 Covenant, (to be discussed later), YHWH didn’t break it. He will still keep His side of the covenant.

Abrahamic Promise/Oath/Covenant 3 – YHWH’s third promise covenant was declared with His own oath

In Gen 22:16-18, YHWH declares that He (YHWH) HAD sworn by Himself, on account of Abraham not withholding his only son, Isaac, & because Abraham listened to YHWH’s voice. YHWH says He (YHWH) will bless Abraham, & multiply his (Abraham’s) seed as the stars of the heavens, & as the sand of the shores, & that his seed (Abraham’s) would possess the gate of YHWH’s enemies.

Gen 22:18 tells us that in Abraham’s seed, all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.

Gen 22:16 And He said, I have sworn by Myself, declares YAHWEH, that on account of this thing you have done, and have not withheld your son, your only son,
Gen 22:17 that blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is on the lip of the sea. And your Seed shall possess the gate of His enemies.
Gen 22:18 And in your Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have listened to My voice.

Gen 22:17-18 seem to refer back to the promise of an inheritance that YHWH made to Abram in Gen 12:2-3, and in Gen 15:5. This was the oath referred to in Gen 26:3 – “I will cause to rise MY OATH which I swore to your father Abraham”.

Gen 26:3 Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your seed I will give all these lands. And I will cause to rise My oath which I swore to your father Abraham.

This Promise/Oath/Covenant was unconditional, since YHWH swore it by Himself.

Even though the Hebrew word, brith is not mentioned, clearly, if YHWH makes an oath with Himself, that would be an unconditional ‘royal grant’ covenant !

Let’s now examine possibly, the most important biblical covenant, YHWH’s covenant, that He calls, “My covenant”, that is often referred to as “the covenant”. It is proposed in Exod 19:5-6, and was only ever made with one nation, Israel.

Exo 19:5 And now IF listening you will listen to My voice, and will keep My covenant, you shall become a special treasure to Me above all the nations, for all the earth is Mine.
Exo 19:6 And you shall become a kingdom OF priests for Me, a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the sons of Israel.(HRB)

From these & following verses, these aspects of covenant are expressed :

Proposal :    “IF listening, you will listen to My voice, & will keep My covenant”

Acceptance :    “all YHWH has spoken we will do” (Exod 19:8, 24:3 & 7)

Blessings :   “you shall become a special treasure to Me above all the nations; … a kingdom OF priests for Me, a holy nation”

Consequences : not stated here but are clearly applicable (see Exod 32 & Deut 28 for the consequences when this covenant was broken)

Exo 19:8 And all the people answered together and said, All which YAHWEH has spoken we will do. And Moses brought back the words of the people to YAHWEH.

Exo 24:3 And Moses came and told all the words of YAHWEH to the people, and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, We will do all the Words which YAHWEH has spoken.

Exo 24:7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the ears of the people. And they said, We will do all that YAHWEH has spoken, and we will hear.

Perhaps a paraphrased version of YHWH’s covenant is :

If you Israel, do all that I say, namely, listen to My voice, keep My Torah, My commandments, My statutes, & My judgements, then I (YHWH) will take care of everything else (I will bless you, protect you, provide for you, keep you safe, & show you how to become more & more like Me).

NB – This Mt Sinai covenant, that YHWH calls “My covenant”, was offered only to Israel. The Israelites had the choice to either accept it, or reject it – they decided to accept it, three times.

The conditions of YHWH’s covenant were set by Him – it was, & is a Suzerainty Covenant, where YHWH is the “supreme” suzerain, & Israel is the vassal. This covenant was offered after the Israelites had witnessed YHWH’s powerful actions in Egypt.
What is the “New Covenant”, mentioned in Matt 26:28, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:20, 1 Cor 11:25, 2 Cor 3:6, & Heb 8:8-11?

Mat 26:28 For this represents My blood of the New Covenant which concerning many is being poured out for remission of sins.

Mar 14:24 And He said to them, This is My blood, that of the New Covenant, which is poured out concerning many.

Luk 22:20 And in like manner the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is being shed for your sakes.

1Co 11:25 In the same way the cup also, after supping, saying, this cup is the New Covenant in My blood, each time you drink it, do this in remembrance of Me.

2Co 3:6 who also made us able ministers of the New Covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter of the Torah (law) punishes with death, but the Spirit makes alive

Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, He said to them, "Behold, days are coming, says YAHWEH, and I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah;
Heb 8:9 not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day of My taking hold of their hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I rejected them, says YAHWEH.
Heb 8:10 Because this is the covenant which I will covenant with the house of Israel after those days, says YAHWEH, I will give My Laws into their mind, and I will write them on their hearts, and I will be their Elohim, and they shall be My people."
Heb 8:11 And they shall no more teach each one their neighbor, and each one his brother, saying, Know YAHWEH; because all shall know Me, from the least of them to their great ones.

Q:  Is this “covenant”, mentioned in the above verses, a “new” covenant?
A:  No – based on my research, I believe it is nothing more than a renewal of the relationship covenant between YHWH, & His chosen nation, Israel. What is “new” about it is that, with Messiah Yahushua as its head, the “original” covenant can now be applied in such a way, that it will be perfectly kept. Heb 8:8-13, quoting Jer 31:31-34, explains that “YHWH will put His Torah in their minds, & will write it on their hearts”. We are told in Heb 12:24 that Yahushua is the mediator of this “new” covenant.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, says YAHWEH, that I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

Jer 31:32 not according to the covenant that I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt (which covenant of Mine they broke, although I was to be a husband to them, says YAHWEH).
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will cut with the house of Israel: After those days, declares YAHWEH, I will put My Torah in their minds, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their Elohim, and they shall be My people.
Jer 31:34 And they shall no longer each man teach his neighbor, and each man his brother, saying, Know YAHWEH. For they shall all know Me, from the least of them even to the greatest of them, declares YAHWEH

Heb 12:24 and to Yahshua the Mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkling of His blood, which speaks better things than Abel did.

I strongly believe that in each case where “new” is the translation, it should be translated as “renew”, as it can apply to a “new moon”, or more accurately, a "renewed” moon.

If we read Deut 4, & specifically verses 30-31, we see a reference to a future covenant. For context, please start in verse 27, where YHWH says He will scatter Israel, because they broke His Exod 19:5-6 covenant. In verse 29, YHWH tells us (Israel), that “if we seek Him with all our heart & being, we will find Him”. Deut 4:30-31 reads :

Deu 4:30 in your distress, when all these things have found you, in the latter days, then you shall return to YAHWEH your Elohim, and shall listen to His voice.
Deu 4:31 For YAHWEH your El is a merciful Elohim. He will not forsake you, nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.

Isn’t returning to YHWH, & listening to His voice, a direct reference to His Exod 19:5-6 covenant ?

Exo 19:5 And now if listening you will listen to My voice, and will keep My covenant, you shall become a special treasure to Me above all the nations, for all the earth is Mine.
Exo 19:6 And you shall become a kingdom of priests for Me, a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the sons of Israel.

Doesn’t Deut 4:31 tell us that YHWH will not forget “His” (Exod 19:5-6) Covenant ?

Yes, we (Israel) broke “the Exod 19:5-6” Covenant, & so a “new one” is needed, BUT, again, according to Jer 31:31-34 & Heb 8:8-13, it will be the same as the Exod 19:5-6 covenant, but this time, because it will be written on our minds & hearts, we will keep it.

Q: Is this “new covenant” offered to followers of Yahushua, or to everyone ?
A:  I believe it is only offered to the followers of Yahushua

Q: Is this “new covenant” about a new relationship between YHWH & Christians which was mediated by Yahushua (Heb 12:24), & is about being “saved by grace through faith” (Eph 2:5 & 8) ?

Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in our sins, He made us alive together with Messiah by whose grace we are saved;

Eph 2:8 For by grace you are saved, through faith, and this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of YAHWEH;

A:  While it is true that we are “saved by grace through faith”, which is a free gift (Eph 2:8), the question needs to be asked, what are we saved for ? I believe that Scripture is clear that we are saved from the death penalty of our sin, so that we can serve YHWH.

Don’t we serve YHWH by “obeying” His voice ?

Don’t we “obey YHWH”, by keeping His Torah ?

Isn’t the biblical language of love, “obedience” ?

So no, when I read my Bible in the original languages, & in the original context, I don’t find any scriptural evidence of a new relationship between YHWH & any other group, other than Israel !

Q: Do these followers of Yahushua need to decide that they will accept this “new covenant” ?
A:  Absolutely – they have to make that choice

Q: What are the conditions attached to YHWH’s offer ?
A:  YHWH offers His “renewed” Covenant, by asking the followers of Yahushua, as He did the original Israelites, “if listening, you will listen to My voice, & will keep My covenant” (Exod 19:5)

Without any doubt, all the original Torah, commandments, statutes & judgments, are still in place, & those who accept YHWH’s & Yahushua’s proposal, must keep those parts of it that apply to them. Remember, no one can keep all the parts of it since, some parts are for the high priest, some for priests, some for Levites, some for men, some for women, some for farmers & some of it is for everyone. Those who do accept YHWH’s offer, must “guard” the whole Torah (Deut 5:1), & do all of it that specifically applies to them.

Deu 5:1 And Moses called to all Israel and said to them, Hear, Israel, the statutes and the judgments which I speak in your ears today. And you shall learn them, and be on guard to do them.

Q: What are the blessings that go with this “new covenant” ?
A:  They are the same as the original ones, stated in Exod 19:5-6. There is a list of blessings also given in Deut 28:1-14.

you shall become a special treasure to Me above all the nations; … a kingdom OF priests for Me,   a holy nation

Q: What are the consequences for breaking this “new” covenant ?
A:  Because YHWH will put all His Torah in the minds of those who accept this “new” covenant, & will write it on their hearts, those who accept it will not want to break it - there do not appear to be any negative consequences, only positive ones.

Q: Has the “new” covenant been established ?
A:  Unfortunately, the “new” covenant may have been offered, but, since Jer 31:31 & Heb 8:8, each tell us that this “new” covenant will be made with the house of Israel (Ephraim), AND with the house of Judah (Jews), who will be re-united as the whole house of Israel, (Jer 31:33 & Heb 8:10), as yet, this clearly hasn’t happened – these verses seem to be telling us that it will not be until these two houses are re-united that, YHWH’s Torah will be “written on their hearts”. So until, then, all the consequences for breaking YHWH’s covenant, still apply, once we have accepted His proposal.

Q: What happens those who do not accept YHWH’s “new” covenant proposal ?
A:  I believe that they will be influenced positively by those keeping YHWH’s covenant – they will then want to belong to the “new” covenant group, & will be taught what they need to do by that “new” covenant group.

Have you ever noticed that in YHWH Word, there is “Covenant language”?

Above, I wrote that the Suzerain often “adopts” a Vassal’s people, & sometimes individuals. If we look in Gen 48, we read about a scene where Jacob “adopts” Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim & Manasseh.

In the Renewed Covenant Scriptures (NT), there are many language references to adoption of groups & individuals by YHWH.

We read the term “adoption” in Rom 8:15 & 23, 9:4, Gal 4:5, & Eph 1:5.
We read the term “sons of God”, in John 1:12. Rom 8:14, 19, Gal 4:4-5, Phil 2:15, Heb 2:10 & Heb 12:7-8, & 1 Jam 3:1-2.

In Rom 8:15 & 8:17, Gal 3:29, Tit 3:7, Heb 1:14, 6:17, 11:9, Jam 2:5, & 1 Pet 3:7, we see the term “heirs”.

Many of today’s believers in Messiah Yahushua, do not understand that YHWH’s Mt Sinai covenant (Exod 19:5-6), with His specially chosen nation, Israel, was an ancient marriage type covenant.

I encourage you to continue reading, & studying the next part of this series that follows.
Covenant Renewal in Ancient Israel

My research indicates that “covenant renewal” is not well understood, especially as it applies to Messiah Yahushua. For this reason, I am attempting to explain what I have been shown as well as I can.

There is quite a bit of “covenant renewal” taking place in Scripture, but it isn’t “spelt out” with descriptive detail, in other words, it doesn’t actually mention “covenant renewal”. In YHWH’s Word, when concepts are well known to the original audiences, they are often not described as such.

Because we are so far removed from the original audience’s understanding of “covenant renewal”, it will be necessary to “add more detail”, to what is written in the biblical text. I hope you can be patient, & open minded with me, as I attempt to do this.

Perhaps the first question we should attempt to answer is, why would someone want to “renew a covenant” ?

While I will attempt to explain this in detail with examples below, I have found that there are four main reasons why a covenant would be “renewed” from time to time.

In ancient Israel & the near East, covenants were “renewed” when :

A:  a covenant is broken                          or

B:   the previous mediator/leader was about to die. The renewal was done to ensure continued, & absolute allegiance to the covenant,    or

C:   there was a new generation,            or

D:   something in a covenant, needed to be “updated”, but not changed.

Again, I am asking you to please be patient with me as I attempt to “put flesh”, so to speak, on these perhaps not so obvious “bones”.

Above, I explained the Abrahamic “covenant of pieces”, as described in Gen 15. In Gen 15:18, we are told that “YHWH cut a covenant with Abram”, that involved his (Abram’s) seed.

Gen 15:18 In that day YAHWEH cut a covenant with Abram, saying, I have given this land to your seed, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,

In Gen 17:21, YHWH prophesies to Abraham & us, that He (YHWH), will establish His covenant with as yet unborn, Isaac.
Gen 17:21 And I will establish My covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set apart time next year.

In Gen 28:13, we have a reference to YHWH telling Jacob that, He (YHWH), will give the land Jacob is lying on, to him (Jacob), & his seed. There is no specific mention of covenant.

Gen 28:13 And, behold, YAHWEH stood above it and said, I am YAHWEH the Elohim of your father Abraham, and the Elohim of Isaac; the land on which you are lying, I will give it to you and to your seed.

In Lev 26:42, YHWH says that He will remember the covenants that He made with Jacob, Isaac & Abraham.

Lev 26:42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and also My covenant with Isaac, and shall also remember My covenant with Abraham, and I shall remember the land.

Q: Which covenants are being referred to in Gen 17:21, Gen 28:13, & Lev 26:42 ?
A:  Again, while we aren’t specifically told, I believe that we need to be aware that, the covenant made to Isaac & to Jacob, was the same covenant that YHWH made with Abram in Gen 15.

Q: Are we told anything about YHWH’s Gen 15 covenant being “renewed” with Isaac & Jacob ?
A:  No – but we need to realise that the original audience clearly understood that the Abram Gen 15 covenant was passed on to first Isaac, & then Jacob, & that it was therefore, “renewed” with Isaac, & then with Jacob.

I hope that is clear.

While there are quite a few “covenant renewals” referred to in YHWH’s Word, I do not intend to examine all of them. I hope that I can cover the main ones, & that as my audience reads the Bible, the incidences of other “covenant renewals” will become more obvious.

Again, I believe that, as well as the Abrahamic covenant, the next most important biblical covenant mentioned in Scripture, occurs in Exodus 19:5-6, which I will copy below. As mentioned above, YHWH calls it, “MY covenant” (if necessary, please re-read it now).

I am asking my audience to again, please be patient, as this next section is a quite long. It will deal with what I believe is a most important covenant in the Bible, & I hope to explain how it is “passed on”, in several “covenant renewal” situations.

I’d like to begin by copying, & examining the significant verses of Exod 24:3-11. As you read through it, please notice that I have written in red, some important, & significant phrases. Please consider them carefully.

Exo 24:3 And Moses came and told all the words of YAHWEH to the people, and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, We will do all the Words which YAHWEH has spokenThis is the OATH declaration
Exo 24:4 And Moses wrote all the Words of YAHWEH. And he rose early in the morning and built an altar below the mountain and twelve memorial pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel

The requirements of the covenant, in v7, are written in the “book of the Covenant

Exo 24:5 And he sent young men of the sons of Israel. And they offered up burnt offerings, and offered sacrifices of bulls, peace offerings to YAHWEH.   A sacrifice was offered
Exo 24:6 And Moses took half of the blood, and he put it in basins. And he sprinkled half of the blood on the altarThis is the blood element
Exo 24:7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the ears of the people. And they said, We will do all that YAHWEH has spoken, and we will hearThis is the OATH declaration, repeated
Exo 24:8 And Moses took the blood and sprinkled on the people, and said, Behold, the blood of the covenant which YAHWEH has cut with you concerning these words. This is also the blood element
Exo 24:9 And Moses and Aaron went up with Nadab and Abihu, and seventy from the elders of Israel.
Exo 24:10 And they saw the Elohim of Israel. And under His feet was as the work of a pavement of sapphire, and as the heavens for clearness.
Exo 24:11 And He did not stretch out His hand to the nobles of the sons of Israel. And they saw Elohim, and they ate and drank. (HRB)   This is the covenant confirming meal.

While this section of verses refers specifically to Exodus, chapters 19 to 23, & the Mt Sinai covenant, that YHWH calls, “My covenant”, it could also be seen as a detailed example of a “covenant renewal” of the Abrahamic covenant, since this covenant is being made with the seed of Abraham, namely, Jacob’s 12 tribes.

But for now, I’d like to look at the Mt Sinai covenant as an original covenant. Please notice that it has all these parts :

A: a proposal (Exod 19:5-6),

Exo 19:5 And now if listening you will listen to My voice, and will keep My covenant, you shall become a special treasure to Me above all the nations, for all the earth is Mine.
Exo 19:6 And you shall become a kingdom of priests for Me, a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the sons of Israel.

B: an acceptance, which I believe would have been declared with an Oath     (Exod 19:8, Exod 24:3 & 7)

C:  the conditions for being the YHWH’s covenant (Exod 19:5-6 & Exod chapters 19 to 23)

D: a list of blessings for keeping it (Exod 19:5-6)

Exo 19:5 And now if listening you will listen to My voice, and will keep My covenant, you shall become a special treasure to Me above all the nations, for all the earth is Mine.
Exo 19:6 And you shall become a kingdom of priests for Me, a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the sons of Israel.

E:  the specific requirements were written in a book (Exod 24:4)

Exo 24:4 And Moses wrote all the Words of YAHWEH. And he rose early in the morning and built an altar below the mountain and twelve memorial pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.

F:  the conditions of the covenant were read to those who accepted the covenant (Exod 24:7)

Exo 24:7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the ears of the people. And they said, We will do all that YAHWEH has spoken, and we will hear.

G: consequences for breaking it (see Exod 32 & Deut 28 for the curses when this covenant was, & is broken)

H:  blood ratification (Exod 24:6 & 8)

Exo 24:6 And Moses took half of the blood, and he put it in basins. And he sprinkled half of the  blood on the altar.

Exo 24:8 And Moses took the blood and sprinkled on the people, and said, Behold, the blood of the covenant which YAHWEH has cut with you concerning these words

I:   a covenant confirming meal (Exod 24:11

Exo 24:11 And He did not stretch out His hand to the nobles of the sons of Israel. And they saw Elohim, and they ate and drank.

If we look at the story of what happened after YHWH’s covenant with Israel had been proposed & accepted, we notice that :

A:  Moses is instructed to go up the mountain to be with YHWH, where He (YHWH), will give Moses, tablets of stone, the Torah, and the commandments which YHWH has written (Exod 24:12). Moses is gone for 40 days & 40 nights (Exod 34:28)

Exo 24:12 And YAHWEH said to Moses, Come up to Me to the mountain, and be there. And I will give to you the tablets of stone, and the Torah, and the commandments which I have written, to teach them.

Exo 34:28 And he was there with YAHWEH forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread and  he did not drink water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Words.

B:  Previously, Moses had gone up & down the mountain four times – whenever YHWH spoke to Moses, it was on the mountain. These are the trips up & down the mountain

     UP - Exod 19:3, DOWN – Exod 19:7;
     UP – Exod 19:8, DOWN – Exod 19:14
     UP – Exod 19:20, DOWN – Exod 19:25
     UP – Exod 24:1, DOWN – Exod 24:3

Please notice that they were short trips, probably less than one day each.

Exo 19:3 And Moses went up to Elohim. And YAHWEH called to him from the mountain, saying, You shall say this to the house of Jacob, and tell it to the sons of Israel.

Exo 19:7 And Moses came (down) and called the elders of the people. And he put all these words before them which YAHWEH commanded him.

Exo 19:8 And all the people answered together and said, All which YAHWEH has spoken we will do. And Moses brought back the words of the people to YAHWEH.

Exo 19:14 And Moses went from the mountain to the people. And he sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes.

Exo 19:20 And YAHWEH came down on the mountain of Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and YAHWEH called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

Exo 19:25 And Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

Exo 24:1 And He said to Moses, Come up to YAHWEH, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy from the elders of Israel. And bow yourselves from a distance.

Exo 24:3 And Moses came (down) and told all the words of YAHWEH to the people, and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, We will do all the Words which YAHWEH has spoken.

C:  When the people hadn’t seen Moses for about 40 days, Exod 32:1 tells us the Israelites concluded that perhaps something must have happened to him, after all, his previous trips, up & down the mountain, were short ones.

Exo 32:1 And the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain. And the people gathered to Aaron. And they said to him, Rise up, make for us gods who may go before our face. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.

D: After coming to this conclusion, they came to Aaron, Moses’ second-in-command, with this problem (Exod 32:1). Aaron decided, probably based on his experience of how to worship the gods of Egypt, to ask the people for their rings of gold (Exod 32:2). From this gold, Aaron formed it into a casted calf, & he also built an altar before it (Exod 32:4-5).

Please note, that Aaron said in Exod 32:5, they would have “a feast to YHWH tomorrow”. I believe that they were sincerely going to have a “feast to YHWH tomorrow”, but it would be based on the way that the Egyptians worshipped their gods.

Exo 32:2 And Aaron said to them, Break off the rings of gold which are in the ears of your wives, your sons and your daughters; and bring them to me.
Exo 32:3 And all the people broke off the rings of gold in their ears, and they brought to Aaron.
Exo 32:4 And he took them from their hand and formed it with an engraving tool. And he made it a casted calf. And they said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
Exo 32:5 And Aaron saw, and he built an altar before it. And Aaron called and said, A feast to YAHWEH tomorrow.

E:  When YHWH saw this, He (YHWH), commanded Moses to go down & “deal” with the idolatrous Israelites (Exod 32:7-8).

Exo 32:7 And YAHWEH spoke to Moses, Come, go down, for your people whom you caused to go up from Egypt are corrupted;
Exo 32:8 they have quickly turned off from the way which I commanded them; they have made for themselves a casted calf and have bowed to it, and have sacrificed to it. And they have said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.

F:  When YHWH tells Moses that He (YHWH), is going to “consume” them (Israel), (Exod 32:10), Moses prays before the face of YHWH saying :

Exo 32:10 And now leave Me alone that My anger may glow against them, that I may consume them. And I will make you a great nation.

Moses then says :

1: “why O YHWH does You anger glow against Your people whom You caused to go up from the land of Egypt with great power, & with a mighty hand” (Exod 32:11). Clearly, YHWH does not want to be worshipped in ways that other gods are worshipped.
2: “that the Egyptians would then say that, YHWH caused them (Israel) to go up, to kill them in the mountains(Exod 32:12)
3: “Remember what You (YHWH) swore by Himself to Abraham, Isaac & Israel” (Exod 32:13).

YHWH was moved to pity Israel (Exod 32:14).

G: Moses goes down with the stone tablets written on both sides, the work of Elohim, & throws them (the tablets) from his (Moses’) hands & breaks them (Exod 32:19). Moses takes the golden calf, burned it with fire, & grounds it until it is fine, & scatters it on the water, & makes the Israelites drink it (Exod 32:20).

Exo 32:19 And it happened, as he came near to the camp and saw the calf and dances, the anger of Moses glowed. And he threw the tablets from his hands, and he broke them below the mountain.
Exo 32:20 And he took the calf which they had made and burned it with fire and ground it until it was fine, then he scattered it on the face of the water. And he made the sons of Israel to drink it.

H:  Aaron makes excuses for his part (Exod 32:22-24)

Exo 32:22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord glow. You know the people that it is in evil.

Exo 32:23 And they said to me, Make for us gods who may go before us; as for Moses, the man who caused us to go up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.
Exo 32:24 And I said to them, Whoever has gold, let them break off. And they gave to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.

I:   Moses asks who was for YHWH, & the Levites join him. Moses tells them to kill the offenders, & about 3000 are killed (Exod 32:26-28).

Exo 32:26 And Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, Who is for YAHWEH? Come to me! And all the sons of Levi assembled to him.
Exo 32:27 And he said to them, So says YAHWEH, Elohim of Israel, each one put his sword on his thigh; pass to and fro from gate to gate in the camp, and each one kill his brother, and each one his neighbor, and each one his kindred.
Exo 32:28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell on that day.

J:  YHWH punishes the Israelites for their rebellion with a plague (Exod 32:35).

Clearly, the golden calf rebellion was a breach of YHWH’s covenant – the Israelites had “broken” the covenant within about 40 days, after agreeing to it, three times, (Exod 34:28)

Exo 32:35 And YAHWEH plagued the people because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

If a covenant is broken, it can be “renewed”, provided the Suzerain agrees.

I believe that this is what happened in Exod 34, where YHWH instructs Moses to :

1: cut two tablets of stone (Exod 34:1)

Exo 34:1 And YAHWEH said to Moses, Cut out for yourself two tablets of stone, like the formerAnd I will write on the tablets the words which were on the former tablet, which you broke.

YHWH also says :

2:  He (YHWH) will write on the two tablets, the words of the former tablets which Moses broke (Exod 34:1)

3:  for Moses to come up to the mountain on his own (Exod 34:3)

At their meeting, we are told several very important characteristics of YHWH :

4:YAHWEH! YAHWEH Elohim! Merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and great in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and not leaving entirely unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on sons, and on sons of sons, to the third and to the fourth generation” (Exod 34:6-7)

Moses asks YHWH to forgive Israel’s iniquity & sin, & take them again, (us) as a possession (Exod 34:9)

Exo 34:9 And he said, If now I have found favor in Your eyes, O YAHWEH, please let my Adonai go in our midst, for it is a stiffnecked people; and You forgive our iniquity and our sin, and take us as a possession.

YHWH says “And He said, Behold, I am cutting a covenant; I will do wonderful things before all your people which not have been done in all the earth, and among all nations. And all the people in whose midst you are shall see the work of YAHWEH, for that which I am about to do is awesome” (Exod 34:10)

Exo 34:10 And He said, Behold, I am cutting a covenant; I will do wonderful things before all your people which not have been done in all the earth, and among all nations. And all the people in whose midst you are shall see the work of YAHWEH, for that which I am about to do is awesome.

YHWH gives details of the commands He requires for being in this “renewed” covenant (Exod 34:11-26)

YHWH instructs Moses to write the words YHWH spoke because on those words, YHWH cut this “renewed” covenant with Moses & Israel (Exod 34:27)

Exo 34:27 And YAHWEH said to Moses, Write these words for yourself, for on the mouth of these words I will cut a covenant with you and with Israel.

YHWH wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten words (Exod 34:28)

Exo 34:28 And he was there with YAHWEH forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread and he did not drink  ater. And He (YHWH) wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Words.

A covenant can be “renewed” just before a leader, with whom the covenant was made, is about to die.

Here are three examples in Scripture where we are shown that, just before a leader dies, he holds a “covenant renewal” type ceremony.

Moses appoints Joshua as his replacement

There are two passages in Scripture where we are told about Moses appointing Joshua as his successor. They occur in Num 27:18-23 & Deut 31:7-13.

We read in Num 27:18-23 that Moses is appointing Joshua as his replacement, but we are not told that it is related to the “renewal” of any covenant – I believe that this is not written down in the biblical text, because the original audience, the Israelites who left Egypt, knew exactly what was going on. I personally, have confidence that this series of verses, is describing details of this “covenant renewal” process.

If we examine the whole book of Deuteronomy, I believe it is a “covenant renewal” of the Mt Sinai covenant document. The title Deuteronomy, derived from Greek, means a “copy,” or a “repetition,” of the law, which is further evidence that it being a “covenant renewal”.

It can be shown that the Book of Deuteronomy can be outlined as follows :

1. Preamble (1:1-5).

2. Historical prologue (1:6-4:49).

3. Stipulations (5-26).

4. Curses and Blessings or Covenant Ratification (27-30).

5. Succession Arrangements or Covenant Continuity, in which are included the invocation of witnesses and directions for the disposition and public reading of the treaty (31-34).

In Deut 31:7-13, Moses is encouraging Joshua (Vs7-8), & in verse 9, we are told that Moses wrote “this Torah”, the conditions for YHWH’s Mt Sinai covenant with Israel. In verses 10-11, Moses commands Israel to proclaim this Torah before all Israel – in the ancient “covenant renewal” process, the original conditions were revisited periodically, as we see in these verses.

In Joshua 8:30-35, we see a ceremony conducted by the new leader of Israel, Joshua, where Joshua builds an altar to YHWH, the Elohim of Israel, referencing the Torah given to Moses, & it being read to Israel.

If we look at what is called “the Shema”, in Deut 6:4-9, I believe that this is giving an oath, a declaration of absolute loyalty, & obedience to YHWH.

Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel, YAHWEH our Elohim is YAHWEH echad.      (the oath)
Deu 6:5 And you shall love YAHWEH your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.
Deu 6:6 And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart.
Deu 6:7 And you shall diligently teach them to your sons, and shall speak of them as you sit in your house, and as you walk in the way, and as you are lying down, and as you are rising up.
Deu 6:8 And you shall bind them for a sign on your hand; and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.
Deu 6:9 And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house, and on your gates.

If we carefully consider Deut 10:12-13, I believe that this tells us clearly, in two verses, what YHWH clearly expects of all those who are in His covenant. I strongly encourage you to read it very carefully.

Deu 10:12 And now, Israel, what has YAHWEH your Elohim requiring of you, except to fear YAHWEH your Elohim, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve YAHWEH your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your soul;
Deu 10:13 to keep the commandments of YAHWEH, and His statutes which I am commanding you today, for your good.  (HRB)

Joshua appoints Israel’s elders, its heads, judges & officers, as his replacement

In Joshua chapter 24, we have another “covenant renewal” ceremony, where Joshua who is about to die, passes the responsibility for keeping YHWH’s Mt Sinai covenant, on to Israel’s elders, its heads, judges & officers.

Messiah Yahushua conducts a “covenant renewal” ceremony

Have you considered that the “Last Supper” was a “covenant renewal” ceremony that Yahushua makes reference to in Matt 26:28, Mark 14:24, & Luke 22:20 ?

Mat 26:28 For this represents My blood of the New Covenant which concerning many is being poured out for remission of sins.

Mar 14:24 And He said to them, This is My blood, that of the New Covenant, which is poured out concerning many.

Luk 22:20 And in like manner the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is being shed for your sakes.

Doesn’t YHWH’s covenant need to “renewed”, because Yahushua His covenant mediator, is about to die ?

Let’s look at the “covenant renewal” activities, & notice the “covenant renewal” language.

In Matt 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25 & Luke 22:14-20, we read :

1:  that Yahushua was having a “covenant renewal” meal with His 12 apostles, as part of their Passover memorial meal, in accordance with YHWH's Exod 12:14 command

2:  what Yahushua did during this meal
~ that He proposed the “new” covenant, when He offered His apostles, who would be the “covenant renewal” replacements, wine & bread

3:  that they each part-took of the wine, & the bread, as an acceptance of this new responsibility

NB – As an aside issue, have you ever noticed that in Gen 14:18, Melchizedek brought “bread & wine”, to share with Abraham. I strongly believe that this was ancient custom, obviously even before this Gen 14:18 event, that Messiah Yahushua performed with His disciples at His last Passover meal. It wasn’t anything new – its just that it hadn’t been written about before, because it was such a common event for this first century audience.

Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine; and he was the priest of the most High El (El Elyone).

After the apostles had accepted this new responsibility, in John 14:15, Yahushua says, “if you love Me, keep My commandments”, a clear reference to the conditions for being in this “new” covenant. Isn’t “loving”, the expression for being faithful & loyal, & by being absolutely obedient to the covenant requirements ?

Joh 14:15 If you love Me, keep My commandments.

If this is a “covenant renewal” ceremony, then surely, the original covenant conditions would apply, & not be something “new” & “different” !

I have more to tell about this “new” covenant below in the section, What is the “new” covenant.

What happens when there is a new generation ?

After the original generation of Israelites, namely, those who had lived in Egypt, had all died (Num 26:65 & Num 32:11-12), the Mt Sinai covenant needed to be “renewed”. Again, please recall that the word, “Deuteronomy”, means “copy” or “repetition”, of the (Torah) law. As stated earlier, it can be shown that the whole book of Deuteronomy is a “covenant renewal” document.

Num 26:65 For YAHWEH had said to them, they shall surely die in the wilderness, and not a man of them should be left except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Num 32:11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob because they have not wholly followed Me;
Num 32:12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have fully followed YAHWEH.

If we examine Deuteronomy chapter 5, we read that Moses reminds the next generation of Israelites of the covenant that was made at Mt Sinai, (Horeb) (Deut 5:2). Moses explains that YHWH cut this covenant with them, as well as their fathers (Deut 5:3). He goes on to explain many of the original details, & in verse 33, Moses commands “You shall walk in all the ways which YAHWEH your Elohim has commanded you, so that you may live, and that good may be to you, and you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess”. Isn’t walking in all YHWH’s ways, truly a matter of life & death ?

Deu 5:2 YAHWEH your Elohim cut a covenant with us in Horeb.
Deu 5:3 YAHWEH did not cut this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, these here today, all of us alive.

In the remaining chapters of Deuteronomy, they & we are given many details about YHWH, & of His covenant with Israel, but the point we need to understand is that, even though it is not spelt out clearly, this whole book is really a “covenant renewal” document, for this new generation of Israelites.

Updating a covenant, not changing it, when the circumstances change

Perhaps the most difficult to understand & accept, reason, to “renew a covenant”, is to “update”, but not change, a covenant, when the original circumstances change. Please read what I am writing very carefully, & try to avoid jumping to any conclusion, until you have read my explanation. I’ll do my best to explain this as well as I can.

I’ll be using just one example to hopefully explain this principle.

If we compare one thing in the Book of Leviticus with a similar thing in the Book of Deuteronomy, we notice that one detail has been “updated”.

Remember that, when we read Leviticus, we need to recall that the Israelites were in the wilderness, & their tribal camps surrounded the Tabernacle (details are in Num chapter 2)– they lived in close proximity to the Tabernacle Altar.

Lev 17:3-6 tell us that while in the wilderness, if a man wanted to slaughter an animal, he was to take it to the Altar – in other words, YHWH was “invited” to such a celebration.

Lev 17:3 Any man of the house of Israel who kills an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or who kills at the outside of the camp,
Lev 17:4 and has not brought it in to the door of the tent of meeting as an offering to YAHWEH, before the tabernacle of YAHWEH, blood shall be imputed to that man; he has shed blood. And that man shall be cut off from the midst of his people;
Lev 17:5 so that the sons of Israel shall bring in their sacrifices which they are sacrificing in the open field to the door of the tent of meeting, to the priest, and sacrifice them for sacrifices of peace offerings to YAHWEH.
Lev 17:6 And the priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of YAHWEH, at the door of the tent of meeting, and shall burn the fat as incense for a soothing fragrance to YAHWEH.

Based on these verses, the Israelites were to :

1:  bring their sacrifices (ox, lamb or goat) to the door of the tent of meeting,

2:  sacrifice them as peace offerings to YHWH, &

3:  the priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of YHWH.

Q: Why would YHWH command this ?
A:  I’m sure there are other reasons, but in the wilderness, we know that the Israelites had very recently left Egypt & its pagan influences, such as offering sacrifices to idols, & so perhaps, YHWH decreed that they needed to bring their sacrifices to Him in the Tabernacle, to avoid any temptation to revert back to their previous pagan practices, after all, YHWH is a jealous El (Exod 20:5).

Exo 20:5 you shall not bow to them, and you shall not serve them; for I am YAHWEH your Elohima jealous El, visiting the iniquity of fathers on sons, on the third and on the fourth generation, to those that hate Me;

In Deut 12:13-16, we read :

Deu 12:13 Take heed to yourself that you not offer your burnt offerings in every place that you see;
Deu 12:14 but in the place which YAHWEH shall choose in one of your tribes (Jerusalem), there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I command.
Deu 12:15 Only with all the desire of your soul you shall sacrifice and shall eat meat within all your gates according to the blessing of YAHWEH your Elohim which He has given you; the unclean one and the clean one may eat of it, as of the gazelle and as of the hart.
Deu 12:16 Only, you shall not eat the blood; you shall pour it (the blood) as water on the earth.

Here, the Israelites were to :

1:  bring their burnt offerings to the place where YHWH shall choose

2:  eat the meat within all their gates, &

3:  pour the blood onto the earth.

Notice that their situation was different when they were in the land – while in the wilderness, they had practiced bringing their slaughtered animals to the Tabernacle Altar for 40 years. Now that they are in the promised land, their circumstances were different, but we still have the same principle operating there.

YHWH now instructs them, since their situation is different, that they do not have to make the journey to the Tabernacle Altar as He did while they were in the wilderness - now He requires them to pour the blood out on the ground like water.

Please note that the only one with authority to “update” a covenant is the Suzerain, in this case, YHWH !

Q: Why was that ?
A:  Because the blood was actually what makes it a sacrifice – sprinkling it on the Altar was the main sacrificial act. So now, this was replaced by pouring the blood out on the ground.

This “updating” isn’t something like, you don’t have to keep the Sabbath - it is applying the principle of a command, to the “updated” condition. I hope that is clear.
So, my friends, based on all the above information & conditions about covenant, I wonder if you will now consider your answers to these “Are You Covenanted Challenge” questions ? .

If you aren’t part of one of these groups, aren’t you, as Paul writes in Eph 2:12,excluded from the Commonwealth of Israel”, & therefore “strangers from the covenants of promise", having no hope, & without YHWH in the world” ?

Q:  If you disagree with the implications of the previous question, what covenant do you think you are in, & what conditions are required to be in that covenant ? How do you really know what you have believed about this ?

I will now give my answers to these questions, & if you haven’t already answered them, I invite you to do the same. I’d be very interested in reading what you have written in your answers.

Q: What is a biblical covenant ?
A:  A covenant is an agreement, usually formal, between two or more parties, to do, or not do something that is specified. At a very basic level, a covenant is an oath-bound relationship between those two or more parties.

Q: Why would you want to be covenanted ?
A:  My response is a bit long, so please be patient as you read it.

My research tells me that, without a doubt, YHWH, the supreme being, & creator of all there is, exists. That research further concludes that Yahushua is His Son, & His Messiah.

I am absolutely convinced that I see direct evidence of YHWH as the creator, everywhere in His creation. Again, my research shows me that the Bible, YHWH’s Word, is His inspired (influenced), inerrant, unchanging, revealed and written word, but only in the original languages, & only in the original intended context. I believe that what YHWH has written in His Word is absolutely true & correct – there are no mistakes, no errors, or no contradictions !

In that inspired, written Word, YHWH tells us through Moses many crucial, & important things. In the original context, we are told in Deut 29:9 that “in guarding /keeping the words of the covenant (the Torah), to do them, that we shall prosper in all that we do”. Do you understand what I just wrote ? Guarding/keeping & doing the words of the covenant (the Torah), results in me prospering in all that I do – WOW ! I can’t understand why anyone would not want that blessing.

We are also told that the in Deut 30:11 that the Torah is not too difficult for you, & that it is not too far off, that Moses sets before Israel, the Word of YHWH, (again, His Torah), which is good & gives life in Deut 30:15, & in Deut 30:19, Israel is told to choose life, (by guarding & doing YHWH’s Torah). I really want this life.

Paul tells us in Rom 7:12 that the Torah is holy, & in 1 Tim 1:8 he says the Torah is good, while in Gal 5:26 tells us that the Torah is perfect.

How much evidence do we need ?

Rev 21:12 tells us that the New Jerusalem will have 12 gates, on which are written the names of the 12 tribes of Israel. Surely this means that in order to get into this great city, & be part of YHWH's kingdom, you must be a member of one of the 12 tribes of Israel. I really want to be in YHWH’s kingdom. Rev 22:14 explains that the qualification for admission to this New Jerusalem, the kingdom of YHWH is, “doing the commandments” of YHWH, His Torah, His Covenant requirements.

Mal 3:6 tells us that YHWH Himself says, “I change not”, For all the above, & for the reason that YHWH never changes what He has decreed that we need to do to have life, why would I not want to keep all the Torah that I can, & why wouldn’t I want to be covenanted with my Creator, YHWH, & His Son, Yahushua ?

May I add a summary of what I have found out from a careful reading of YHWH’s Word, about His Torah ?

The Scriptures reveal that the Torah is much more than a list of dos and don’ts, as many people have been led to believe it to be.

The Torah defines what sin (1 John 3:4) and righteousness are (Ps 119:172).

The Torah shows us what YHWH expects from those who are in YHWH's covenant (Deut 10:12–13).

The Torah convicts man of sin or lawlessness, and brings us to Yahushua, by way of the cross (Gal 3:24).

The Torah brings temporal and spiritual rewards; life and blessing when followed; curses when disobeyed (Deut 28; Matt 5:19).

Obeying the Torah helps deepen a loving and intimate relationship with Yahushua, and helps us to abide in Him (John 14:151 John 2:3-6).

Obeying the Torah helps us to stay spiritually pure (1 John 3:3-6).

Obeying the Torah protects us from the influence of the devil (1 John 3:8).

The Torah provides a framework for divine justice or judgment (Deut 17:11; John 12:48Heb 4:12 cp. Rev 1:16; 2:16; 18:1521).

The Torah forms the basis for the jurisprudence system of civil government (Deut 17:11).

The Torah is heaven’s revelation of divine grace. It reveals how sinful man can be reconciled to a righteous Elohim; it reveals the path of redemption or salvation from slavery to sin through the idea of substitutionary sacrifice. This all points to Yahushua the Messiah, the Redeemer or Saviour of the world.

The Torah reveals the concept of covenant between YHWH and man involving YHWH’s chosen people—the nation of Israel.

The Torah will guide and keep us on the path of righteousness and lead us into YHWH’s everlasting kingdom and spiritual divine family. It acts as a protective guardrail to keep us on the road leading to eternal life. It keeps man from falling into the spiritual ditches or off the spiritual cliff along the side of the road of life.

The Torah is our light in a dark world; the answer to life’s questions and dilemmas (Ps 119:99, 105Prov 6:23).

Through Yahushua the Living Torah, the Torah helps us to become the person that YHWH wants to live with forever. It prepares us to be the spiritual bride of Yahushua (Rev 19:7–8).

Obeying the Torah brings us eternal rewards (not eternal life, which is by grace through faith alone), [Eph. 2:8], in the world to come (Matt. 5:19).

Obeying the Torah-Word of YHWH helps to perfect Yahushua’s love in us (1 John 3:6).

Again, I’m not sure how many reasons a person would need to want to be in covenant with their heavenly Father, YHWH, & His son, Yahushua, but clearly for me, the above list is overwhelming ! Why anyone would not want all these blessings, & benefits, is beyond my comprehension !!

Q: Which covenant should you be considering ?
A:  Because I am a “Follower of the Messiah”, I want to be in covenant with Him - His name is Yahushua, & with His Father, YHWH. As I explained above, because Yahushua, YHWH’s mediator, was about to die, it was necessary to “renew” the Exod 19:5-6 covenant. Heb 8:8 & 13, & Heb 12:24 quote Jer 31:31-34. That is the covenant I want to be part of.

Q: Are you covenanted ?
A:  I believe that I am covenanted, because I decided to be covenanted, & I accepted YHWH’s Exod 19:5-6 proposal, & Messiah Yahushua’s invitation at His last Passover meal. In accepting this covenant, I also accepted the conditions that YHWH required. I am very aware of my decision, including its blessings & consequences.

Q: With whom are you covenanted ?
A:  I am in covenant with YHWH, & Messiah Yahushua

Q: How do you know that you are covenanted ?
A:  I believe that I know I am covenanted with YHWH & Messiah Yahushua because :

1:   by accepting Yahushua as my Master & Saviour, & confessing that YHWH raised Him from the dead, & repenting of my sins, (Rom 10:9-10), I am grafted into Israel (Rom 11:11-24).

Rom 10:9 Because if you confess the Master Yahshua with your mouth, and believe in your heart that YAHWEH raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Rom 10:10 For the heart which believes in Him shall be declared righteous, and the mouth that confesses Him shall live.

2:   I am now part of Israel, I am qualified to accept YHWH’s Exod 19:5-6 covenant proposal, including all the conditions, namely, listening to YHWH’s voice & keeping His Torah, commandments, statutes & judgments.

3:   when I was “mikvahed” (baptized) in the name of Messiah Yahushua for the remission of my sins (Acts 2:38), I made several conscious decisions, which I verbally stated in front of witnesses, namely,

A:   I realised that being mikvahed in the name of Messiah Yahushua was a status change. I decided to, & was changed from “tamei” (biblically unclean) to “tahor” (biblically clean)

B:   I decided to bury the “old man” in me, (Eph 4:22), coming out of the water to walk in “newness of life” (Rom 6:4), by now keeping all of YHWH’s Torah that I can.

Eph 4:22 Lay aside all your former practices and put off the old man, having been degenerate with deceitful lusts,
Rom 6:4 Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death that as Messiah was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, so also we should walk in newness of life.

C:   I verbally & mentally renounced the kingdoms of the world, of satan, & of my own self-sovereignty

D:   I chose to be a citizen in the kingdom of YHWH

E:   I chose to submit myself completely to the ruler-ship & authority of YHWH

F:   I made a commitment to take on all the responsibilities of being a citizen of the kingdom of YHWH, & to strive to live by Torah, YHWH’s teachings & instructions

G:   I requested that YHWH annul any, & all previous agreements with any, & all other organisations & authorities, that I had made, that conflict with Him

H:   I choose to take on myself the precious names of Yahweh, & Yahushua, & commit to walk out my life in such a way as to bring these sacred names, glory & honour, & not shame.

Act 2:38 And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized, each of you in the name of Messiah Yahshua  for the forgiveness of sins, that you may receive the gift of the Spirit of Holiness.

4:   since being in YHWH's, & Messiah Yahushua’s covenant, I have experienced many of YHWH’s blessings, His protection & provision, & I believe that I have become, & am continuing to become, more & more like Him.

Q: What conditions do you need to fulfil, to be in this covenant ?
A:  I am now listening to YHWH’s voice, & keeping His Torah commandments, statutes & judgments.

Q: What are the consequences for keeping the conditions of this covenant ?
A:  Again, since being in YHWH's, & Messiah Yahushua’s covenant, I have experienced YHWH’s blessings, His protection & provision, & I believe that I have become more & more like Yahushua.

Q: Can you break this covenant ?
A:  I can break this covenant by sinning, by transgressing YHWH’s Torah, even though it is my fervent desire, not to do so.

Q: What are the consequences for breaking the conditions of this covenant ?
A:  When I sin by not keeping all of YHWH’s Torah that I can, I lose the covering of Messiah Yahushua’s precious saving blood that I had previously accepted – I am not covered, & therefore, unless I sincerely repent of my sin, I will suffer “eternal death”, the consequence of my sinning.

Q: What can you do when you break it ?
A:  Once I am aware that I have broken YHWH’s covenant by sinning, I can sincerely repent, deciding to return to YHWH’s Torah, when once again, I am covered by Messiah Yahushua’s precious saving blood.

Q: Can you be covenanted with YHWH & Yahushua if you are not
(a) the physical seed of Abraham and/or
(b) part of physical Israel, and/or
(c) “adopted” into Israel as Ruth, a Moabitess was (Ruth 4:11), and/or “grafted in”, as Paul indicates in Rom 11:17, 19, 23 & 24

If you aren’t part of one of these groups, aren’t you, as Paul writes in Eph 2:12, “excluded from the Commonwealth of Israel”, & therefore “strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, & without YHWH in the world

Ruth 4:11 And all the people who were in the gate and the elders, said, We are witnesses. May YAHWEH make the woman who is coming into your house to be as Rachel and as Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel. And may you do worthily in Ephratah, and proclaim the Name in Bethlehem.

Rom 11:17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree were grafted in among them, and became a sharer of the root and the fatness of the olive tree,
Rom 11:18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, it is not you that bears the root, but the root bears you.
Rom 11:19 You will say then, The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.
Rom 11:20 Well! For unbelief they were broken off. And you stand by faith. Do not be high minded, but fear.
Rom 11:21 For if YAHWEH did not spare the natural branches, fear that it may be He will not spare you either.
Rom 11:22 Behold, then, the kindness and severity of YAHWEH: On those having fallen, severity. But on you kindness, if you continue in the kindness. Otherwise, you will also be cut off.
Rom 11:23 And those also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in. For YAHWEH is able to graft them in again.
Rom 11:24 For if you were cut out of the natural wild olive tree, and against nature were grafted into a good olive tree, how much more these being according to nature will be grafted into their own olive tree?

A:  May I begin by stating that I am not intentionally attacking the beliefs of any Christian. All I am doing is using logic, & reasoning, in interpreting what we are told in the Bible. Essentially, all I am writing is what the Bible says.

In Eph 3:6, Paul writes that “the gentiles” can be co-heirs, united in the same body, & partakers together in the promise in Messiah through the Gospel”. So clearly, if gentiles (non-Israelites) are “adopted in”, or are “grafted in” to Israel (Rom 11), they can be participants in YHWH’s covenant.

Please note that I am not referring to the current nation of Israel in the middle East – I am referring to biblical Israel.

However, unless gentiles are “grafted in”, or “adopted” by Israel, AND, unless they accept YHWH’s, & Messiah Yahushua’s covenant proposal conditions, I believe that, based on Eph 2:12, which I have copied again so that you can read it once more, they CANNOT be participants in YHWH’s covenant. I really believe that this is a very serious, “salvation” issue.

I believe that we need to examine the idea of "salvation" form another perspective.

Q: Do you believe that, based on Rom 11, that you are “grafted in” to the olive tree, namely, Israel ?

Q: Again, do you believe that, based on Eph 1:5, that you, as a gentile, have been adopted into YHWH’s family ?

If your answers to the above two questions is "yes", then please consider the next few questions.

Q: If these beliefs are true, does it seem logical, & reasonable to think that YHWH would bring truth to the world through His Messiah & the apostles, and that He would then adopt “gentile”, believers in Messiah Yahushua, into YHWH’s family, and then tell the new children that they don't have to do what He had the original children do?

Q: Do you believe that YHWH would say to the Jews, who are part of His original family, Israel, throw all that nasty stuff away that you all have been doing up till now – you know, all My Torah instructions, commandments, statutes, ordinances & judgments, that I gave you, so that you would have life – it’s all been bondage, & really horrible? I knew when I gave them to you, that you  wouldn't be able to do it – sorry, but thank you for trying !

Q: Do you really think that YHWH would say to the Jews, again who are part of His original family, Israel, I still need you all to follow My instructions, & keep My commandments, statutes, ordinances & judgments, but these new children I'm adopting, they don't have to - I'm going let them live free of all of that, & live in whatever way that they were used to living before I adopted them?

Q: Does it make any logical sense that YHWH say to the goy (gentiles), that He is adopting, come into My house - be my children, & meet my other children. I require a lot of them that I'll never require of you, but welcome to the family? Isn’t that totally illogical?

Q: Doesn’t Eph 2:19 tell us that “now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the Saints and of the household of Yahweh”?

Doesn’t that mean that we have become citizens in an established nation, and we have become children in an established family? Doesn’t that therefore mean that we are therefore, subject to the laws of that nation, and that we have to live by the rules of the family we've been adopted into?

Never was it written that the Gentiles would just get to start their own division of Yahweh's worshipers. Never was it written that the Gentiles would have a different citizenship and live in a different house.

We are citizens and an established nation we are children in an established family, & as such we are to rejoice, & we are to learn.

Eph 2:12excluded from the Commonwealth of Israel”, & therefore “strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, & without YHWH in the world” ?

I am sure that many Christians will claim to be in a “new” covenant, & they probably are in some covenant, but, unless they do what YHWH’s covenant says they need to do, they cannot be in YHWH’s Covenant.

What if the doctrine Christians have been taught, & have believed about being in YHWH's, & Yahushua’s new covenant, is wrong ?

The problem sadly as I see it, is that most Christians, seem to be totally “unaware” of what is required of them, in order to be participants in YHWH’s, & Yahushua’s “renewed covenant” !

If you see any errors in my interpretation of Scripture, and/or any errors of logic, I would be very interested in any feedback (positive & negative), comments and/or questions that you may have.

I pray for YHWH’s blessings to you & yours, in Messiah Yahushua’s precious name
Today in modern society, the bride is “the star of the show” in marriage ceremonies – she is the focus – she does all the planning. In biblical times, this was not the way that it was.

We often hear the phrase, “the bride of Christ (Messiah)”, & if we are the “bride of Messiah”, we need to know, & understand what our role is, & what is our groom’s role ! We know that Messiah will be faithful to fulfil all the requirements of the groom.

Let’s see how this worked in ancient times.

The first step in an ancient marriage covenant, including a first century wedding, was the betrothal.

The main parts of the betrothal were :

1:  Usually, the man would see a woman, a virgin, he wanted to marry, & he would ask his father to be involved.

2:  The man, with his father, would come to the village, & meet with the woman’s father. At this meeting, the man would explain to the woman’s father what he would offer - how he would take care of her – what he would provide – this would be the proposal for the wedding covenant.

3:  If the woman’s father was happy with these details, he would accept the wedding covenant for his daughter.

4:  The woman’s father would then talk to his daughter, explaining details about the future groom – that her future groom comes from a good family, & how he would take care of her.

The 2nd step in an ancient marriage was to negotiate the price of the bride – the bride price.

It wasn’t enough to establish a covenant, now the man had to make an offer that would show how much he loved this woman, & how much he wanted to marry her – he would make the best offer he could. Once this was established, they moved to the next stage.

A 3rd step in an ancient marriage involved the woman’s father talking to her, & explaining the latest details – the father would say - I have accepted the covenant – all is prepared – we agree on the price.

Then his daughter would prepare a meal for her future husband – of course, the man would be formally invited.

The future groom would knock at the door of his future bride’s home – on hearing this, the woman would go to the door, & open it a little – they couldn’t see each other - she’d then go back to the table where the meal would be eaten – she’d wait there.

Only when the door was opened, would the man come in – they would see each other officially for the first time - they would sit down together, & eat a meal.

Next, the man would pour a glass of wine for the woman – he then offers her the cup – if she drank the wine, the wedding was sealed – the marriage  covenant was ratified - they were legally married, or “betrothed”, although the marriage had not been consummated. She would pass the cup back to him, & he would drink from it.

A 4th step involves the future groom leaving his future bride, & going back to his father’s house – there he begins to prepare a home for his bride – it would take at least one year.

When the home was built, & set up, the future groom’s friends would come up & ask him, “when are you going back to get your bride – everything is ready ?”

In those days, it wasn’t up to the son to make this decision – he didn’t have the authority to choose the day he would go back to get his bride – only his father had the authority – when asked when he would go back to get his bride, the son would reply to his friends question, “I don’t know the time, the hour, or the day, you must ask my father”.

Finally, as a 5th step,  the father would give his blessing -  the groom & his friends would go back to the village where the woman lived with her father - when he got to the village, he would sound the shofar – the woman would hear the sound of the shofar – she had to be ready because she didn’t know exactly when he was coming – when she heard the shofar, she would get up & look – she would see her beloved – when it was confirmed that she was ready, the village gate would be opened – the groom would go into the village – he & his bride would meet half-way - he would then take her back to her father’s house where they’d have the wedding supper together.

During the ancient wedding ceremony, the person conducting it, would incorporate a covenant of salt, as mentioned in Num 18:19. In ancient times, when two people wanted to enter a covenant of loyalty, especially a marriage, each would bring a small pouch of salt, they would recite the details of the covenant, exchange salt from one pouch to the other, and then shake the pouches. The symbolism is powerful. The only way their marriage covenant could possibly be broken is, for each to individually retrieve their own grains of salt, which is impossible.

We can now look at how all this is related to being “the bride of Messiah” – there are several parallels we can notice.

Let’s begin by focusing on Yahushua at His last Passover – He says something to the effect in Matt 26:28, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:20, & quoted in 2 Cor 3:6,  “I have come to establish a new covenant with you”.

In Luke 22:20, Yahushua says “this is the new covenant in my blood which is shed for you” – this was the price He was willing to pay.

In John 15:13, Yahushua says “greater love than this has no one, that anyone should lay down his life for his friends”. Again, a reference to the price He was willing to pay for us, His bride.

So Yahushua, just like in the first century wedding, came to establish a covenant, & offered to pay the bride price (the highest price, His life).

We see another step in Rev 3:20 – Yahushua says “behold, I stand at the door & I knock, & if anyone hears my voice, I will come in & sup with them”.

Think back to Yahushua at His latest Passover - He pours the wine, & says each of you “take this cup & drink of it” (Matt 26:27-29, Luke 22:17)

Q: Why did Yahushua do that ?
A:  Because the groom had to offer the bride the cup.

In doing this, the betrothal between the groom (Yahushua), & the bride (us) began.

In John 14:2, Yahushua says
In My Father’s house there are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you”.

Yahushua our Bridegroom, gives to us all His wonderful promises - He promises :
~   to prepare a place for us (John 14:2)
~   to never leave or forsake us (Heb 13:5)
~   to heal us (Luke 4:18)
~   to protect us (Luke 4:10)

Q: When did Yahushua drink the cup ?
A:  In the garden, (Matt 26:39-42), Yahushua says He has to drink the cup, & then pay the price.

When the apostles asked Him when He would restore the kingdom, He gave a good wedding covenant answer – “I don’t know, the angels in heaven don’t know, only the Father knows”.

Aren’t we told in 1Thes 4:16-17, “He (Messiah) will descend from on high, sound the shofar, & those who are alive will be caught up to meet Him”.

I’m sure there are other parallels, but these will suffice for this study.
